Pergola , no more.
Hello everyone , how are you all?
Well here we are in another Heatwave, thank god the wind is very strong and it doesn't feel as hot as it says it is.
We took advantage of the cooler day on Sunday and dismantled the Pergola. It came down a lot quicker than it went up. it was quite sad really. The countless hours we have spent sitting under it, birthdays, cuppa time and family time , putting up hanging baskets and then realizing i can't quite reach to water them and getting drenched as a result. The poor thing was rotten in places and i think it was held together with Faith and Hope . It has been a part of our garden for over 30 years and a part of our history here at Flowertot Mansion.
2 hours later and it has all gone.
I have to say in one way i am relieved it has been taken down, when we had that last big storm i watched the entire thing move and shake, i have to admit i was a little scared it might collapse and i really don't fancy asking the Council to replace windows that my Pergola smashed, yet it seems so big and bright and enormous when i look out the window .
The unfortunate Sedge has also been removed, if it had grown somewhere else i think we would have let it be.
The next thing to go will be the She shed, it needs to be emptied and we have decided to just take it apart and get rid of it, in places it too is rotten and also lop sided. The fences behind it will be painted and then a ton of gravel will be spread all over to make it look better.
As for shade we are going to purchase one of those wind out Sun shades, the price is not too bad and if can wait a while i will get a deal on it i think, the company are always offering discounts.
If we have a wind out one at least i know that it will be safely tucked away in the gale force winds.
Hubby and kiddos have been to the Allotments and come home with some goodies.
I realised that I'd dug up a sedge plant after reading your previous post. I tried to find its name but failed then saw yours. It took some digging!! It had overtaken some smaller plants. Apparently it can become invasive. The bottom of our general waste bin has fallen out. Contacted our council via online form. A month later we're still waiting for a replacement as apparently there's a shortage. Meanwhile I'm using wheelie bin liners to hold the contents in - not good in this sweltering heat! I'm up at the tip at least once a week as well with garden stuff.
ReplyDeleteHi..o the Sedge was really dug in, it took us ages to get it out, i didn't know they were invasive, suppose it is a good thing we removed it then, the breeze block it was under has buckled and moved upwards, only a matter of time before it broke it altogether. I have found that the online forms for the Council are rubbish, no one ever replies and when i did do one i didn't hear anything so i rang and they had no clue what i was talking about. That is not good if the bottom fell out, how on earth can they have a shortage of bins.It must be terrible in this heat wave .I did a splurge on the garden bin stickers ti his year, i knew we were going to have a lot of garden waste and we can't always get our schedules right so we can go with our son in his car to the tip, which has just decided to go back to appointment only.

When you ring the council if you receive any dithering, with regard to when works will be undertaken, mention that you may speak to the housing ombudsman with regard to the terrible state that the ceiling has been left in. (Always an option) You could also mention public health (after all, it is a food preparation area), and health and safety exec. (not a safe option, the way it's been left in)
ReplyDeleteAlso, no council team leader likes to have a letter of complaint sent into the Council Chief Exec, a local councilor or the MP If I remember rightly, you were left with a terrible mess. Hope this helps

I bet the garden looks so different without the pergola. I'm growing grapes on ours and it looks so lovely. Unfortunately it's starting to disintegrate and will need replacing at some point.
ReplyDeleteHi Cherie, yes it does look vastly different and i felt sad about it but the rot was all the way through some of the beams. That was our plan to grow Grape vines up and along it but unfortunately the rot was too much.
