I love Autumn

Hello all,how are you today?

As the clocks went back last night it was got dark quite early tonight.
How nice it was to put the chickens to bed early and then put the lamps on,close the blinds then draw the curtains.I have put the back door curtain back up..i know its not that cold just yet but i don't want to rush around to do it..i would rather preserve any warmth we have..just take the chill off the back porch.
The girls have got their big fluffy housecoats out for wrapping up in .
So far the weather has been quite mild but its going to change apparently .
We haven't had our heating on yet..we have cardigans, big jumpers, thick socks and slippers to keep us warm for now..the longer we don't have to use it for the better but i am not a scrooge i will have it on and when it is i like to keep our house at a nice even temperature .Our heating will be on for about 2 hours in the mornings and then another 2 hours late afternoon or evening..we don't bother having it on at night there is no point..we are all wrapped up in warm housecoats and have pj's and slippers on  and when we are in bed we have big quilts and lovely woolen blankets. Infact at times the blankets make it too warm but i am not complaining i would rather be a bit warm than chilly for sure.

I like this time of year..porridge with various toppings for breakfast, chunky soups, veg packed casseroles and all the puddings from childhood with creamy custard to "keep your insides warm" as my gran would say.

The colours at this time of year are gorgeous..our beautiful trees look like big yellow flames shooting for the sky,my Virginia Creeper is a ruby red.And everything seems to be slowing down and mellowing out .This time of year is when i tend to reflect on the things i have done through the year..how i hope i have made the most of our produce from the allotments and always grateful for freezers packed full of fruits and veg and all the good meals i have made from them.I always feel so appreciative of it.This time of year is when i tend to try and relax and just chill out before Christmas comes around and i get busy again.
I love Autumn..well i love all the seasons as they all have their  own merits but Autumn is my favourite.
The colours and all the misty mornings that swirl all over then finding all the spider webs covered in dew just seem to sparkle. The frosty mornings are just beautiful..that white crispy crunchy sound when you go outside..the coldness of the air..just makes you feel glad to be alive.

Put the clocks back...don't forget

Sorry folks..life is busy..

Hello all,how are you all doing?
As i say life has been busy around here for a bit..so today i am relaxing
I am watching the Toy Story films with the girls and eating peanuts..the spicy ones..wow my mouth is on fire but feels good.
My camera has decided to give up on me so no photo's..thankfully i have clipart so that will have to do.I can't afford a new one and the one i have is still good but the card won't store my photo's and the cable is being a devil and not connecting my laptop to it..o well its a small thing and not a big problem.
So what have we been doing then..we have been extra busy with school work and doing all sorts of different things..which take a while to sink in..for example Division ..hubby found a great website that actually explains it all but in the most basic and easy way.We have been doing a few of those and also exploring Fractions.

My brother gave us a big bag of cooking apples..i had a small production line going in the dining room..it worked very well and the rewards from it were amazing.I also managed to get some Carrots that didn't have fly in them from the allotment, these have been sorted and frozen for winter use. I did make some Carrot soup with some of them and some coleslaw for hubby and i.

We made a Farmhouse Apple and Sultana Cake..well i didn't the girls did..i let them measure it all out and read the instructions..they did really well and the cake was delicious..we also got 3 containers of Stewed Apples and a full jar of Apple Sauce.I think my dining room has just about recovered from the cake mixing.

Fern has been teaching Iris how to play Chess..and got her bum kicked after a few hours..they then played draughts and it was a draw.Iris was most pleased with herself..i can't play chess at all so Fern offered to teach her as she has no one to play her favourite game with.

We have been learning all about Italy..quite ironic as it was hit by 2 Earthquakes this week..absolute devastation for them. Shocking images .We made a huge collage of all the beautiful scenery and fun facts about Italy ..we will then lead this on to the Vatican City with the population of 800..smallest city ever.

We went a little crazy ordering books from the Library website..we have had the Halloween and Harvest Festival books..i found some Christmas ones and ordered those ..then Fern asked for some Roald Dahl books that she hasn't got. As for Iris well she is what you call a reluctant reader..she can read but just can't be bothered..i found a wonderful childrens author Russell Hoban..we had one of his books and she enjoyed it..so i ordered the rest from the Library for her..he has worked with Quentin Blake and its like reading a Roald Dahl book to be honest..she loved it..the pictures were amazing and it was short and to the point which she loves the most.I think in the end i ordered about 6 for her.
I co-ordinate her Literacy work with what books we are reading ..i do the same for Fern but she has a lot more to do than Iris..Pinterest is a wonderful place and the teachers who pin the school work are amazing.
We have read Apple pigs and Johnny Appleseed quite a few times as we all enjoy these..
This book is an absolute must for us..its a really old copy battered but so much loved..
The copy of Johnny Appleseed is exactly the same as the one above..its such a good read..and we love to read it all the time actually not just in the Autumn.
Spare room....
                    .
           \\\///

It didn't look like this but felt like it

Hubby and i finally got into the spare room and sorted it all out..the items i was selling on Ebay have gone and my daughter took a portable tv to the tip..just have 2 more of them and a computer monitor to go and thats done. We have packed away the fans and air conditioning unit after they were cleaned for use next year.I emptied out the huge wardrobe and sorted that..one shelf is now my best China Serving dishes and spare cups and saucers. The shelf below has all my Christmas tins and table linen..the next one has rolled yp woolen blankets and the very bottom has all my tablecloths and napkins. Which means now my airing cupboard doesn't look like it has exploded. All my cushion covers are in a small box in the bottom of the wardrobe. This should make it easier and simpler for me to just get what i need without having to dig through piles of stuff.
One shelf on the wall is full of the girls school work and art work ready for inspection. The other shelf has Barbie stuff and jigsaw puzzles on it.
I made space on my big bookcase for the Christmas books and re arranged the rest of them.It does look much neater and tidier than before.

I gave away some big stuff on freecycle..people make me laugh..does it work? does it have batteries? and the best one was can you post it?..er no sorry..well i don't want it then..and some who wanted the items and arranged to collect them never turned up and never got in touch..so the next person on the list got them and she was lovely and very appreciative of the bits she got.
I also had some smaller sales on Ebay with the last 2 items..which freed up some space very small space but space nontheless..i also had an issue with a seller..who i think was lying and trying to wriggle out of giving me a  refund..i was patient and polite but i had enough after 3 weeks and asked for a refund..waited another week and still nothing..so i got onto Ebay and opened a case..bingo within 2 days i got my refund..amazing that was.
I bought Fern some long sleeved tops..she has grown like a weed and a beautiful one at that.
My daughter Fionna gave Iris a lovely winter coat..its waterproof, windproof and insulated..Iris loves it and in her favourite colour too.
My other daughter Andrea gave us her old fridge/freezer as its a small one and she needs a big one..it will really come in handy to store my fruit in.
We made some Lavender bags for the airing cupboard and also refreshed the older ones. I get a lovely waft of Lavender everytime i open the door now.
I have borrowed some ceramics pots from my mum to keep my Spider plants in..they are growing really well and one is having little spider plant babies..yes..

Frugal things.
I got a refund from the electric company as i had over paid my Direct Debit..that was a nice surprise.
I cut the legs of 3 pairs of my old jeans to use for patches.
I made a lovely new picture for the just above my bookcase.
We have stuck to our meal plans and shopped accordingly for it.
Batched baked
Made soups and froze them.
I fixed a jumper that had a tiny hole.
I sewed 2 buttons onto my winter coat.
Got all the big jumpers and cardigans out..we haven't had our heating on yet and don't plan on it either..not yet anyway.
Hubby cleaned all the drains out and disinfected them.
I cleaned all the windows inside and hubby did outside..i also washed down the doors/frames and steps.
Put away all the garden furniture .
Hubby lined his shed walls with old kitchen doors..it actually looks really cool..he made shelving from scrap wood and also tool holders.
I spray painted 3 more tins for Christmas gifts..
Downloaded a free times table sing along for Iris
Downloaded some free school work and also some free pictures.
Received a £10 voucher..which i used to buy Iris a lovely smock top,i found a free delivery code and the top came to just under the voucher price..very happy with that.
I think thats about it..

Next week as the schools are going back we are taking our break.we have stuff lined up.
A nature walk
Conker picking
Baking
Scenting pinecones
Reading and generally having a nice relaxing time.

We are not having Fireworks this year..no point as the girls really don't enjoy them.So instead of seeing our money go up in smoke we have offered a good deal. A new Dvd  and burgers, hotdogs and popcorn..whilst watching the new film..much cheaper and will probably last longer too.
So thats me all caught up folks..i will be back.

Painted the gate but ran out again..

I seem to have done nothing else this year but paint..don't get me wrong i love painting.I actually find it relaxing and i also love to see how a coat of paint can dramatically change something.
I forgot to take a before picture of the gate..but i think you can guess what it looked liked before..as the side panels are still red.
I will finish the side panels this weekend if the weather holds out.
Its called Willow Green from Wilko's..goes on really well.
sara

I really should check the size of things before i buy them..

I got myself a lovely bargain on Lobay at the weekend..looked at the pictures of it and thought Wow..its gorgeous..i used my pocket money to pay for it as i had it in my purse.I say pocket money but its not..i call it that. Its my personnel spending money.
As i was saying the item was gorgeous and a real bargain at a tenner..so i placed my bid and i won.
My dad took me to pick it up..we couldn't believe how big it was..my poor hubby almost had heart failure when we carried it in..but ever resourceful and smart..he can put it up for me.
What do you think..
He is going to shorten the chain and he has ordered a huge and very strong Chandelier hook for me.
Next time i should look at the size..

Beautiful Rainbow

I love Rainbows so vibrant and magical..yes i know its only the sun shining through the rain but i love them.
We had a down pour the other day and then the sun came out and gave us this to lift our spirits
Its a bit blurred as i had to zoom in..
A double whammy..you can just see the reflection of the Rainbow in front..
It stayed for ages and was so bright..best one i have seen for a while.

What a difference..

O i love the colour changes in my Virginia Creeper
From this
to this..
Magnificent isn't it..my little Japanese Maple is also a gorgeous deep red too..

Why is it????

Hello all,how are you today?
I am a little baffled at the moment folks..i had to buy the girls some new slippers as the ones they have are falling to bits literally and Iris has the gift of wrecking footwear within weeks of having new ones.
Anyway,i was looking on Ebay and was puzzled as to why the girl slippers are much more expensive than the boy slippers. And when i have bought the girly ones they seem to fall to bits within months..especially the fluffy boot type ones..the heels go and the backs sag and they just look tired and awful really.
I have noticed over the last few years that girl clothes, shoes and slippers seem to have rocketed in price. Why i ask myself..ridiculous really.
So being as frugal as ever i had a look at the boys slippers..flipping heck ,half the price and look better made to be honest.
So now the girls have some boys slippers with proper bottoms and half the price..they actually love them so its a win win for all of us.
Have you noticed this as well..and i was gobsmacked that the slippers i bought for hubby and me were a lot cheaper than the girls ..ours were £5.50 a pair and the girls were £7.90 a pair..plus i bought myself some mens slippers as i refuse to pay extortionate amounts for ladies slippers..
Its just a bloody rip off to make parents pay more as they know we need them for the children..its unfair as i feel sorry for the parents that really struggle but want the best they can afford for them. Its pointless buying the really cheap ones as you end just buying more within a few months..and they don't really keep their feet warm..i know i tried it when my older girls were little..pay a few pounds for them but within weeks have to pay out more..a never ending circle.
Right now i am looking forward to my new men slippers arriving to keep my feet warm and toasty and half the price will make them feel that little bit more cosy.

Happy Birthday to our little Iris

Our littlest girl turned 8 years old today.
She is a beautiful little soul, generous and kind. Boundless energy and always so thoughtful for a little one.
The gifts she received today were generous and very thoughtful of her sisters and big brother.
If its got a pony or unicorn on it then she is happy and boy was she happy today.
We made her a cake,a chocolate strawberry cake covered in chocolate frosting and it was  her choice.

Here she is in her new pyjama's from her biggest sister Andrea..cheeky monkey..it took me 4 attempts to get a picture as she kept pulling faces.
She has had a brilliant day .
Its hard to believe she is our youngest and that she is now getting to be a big girl.
Love you Iris to the moon and back, around the stars and the deep blue sea to the far ends of the galaxy.

Leg update..wow look at that bruise.. Updated

Hello all,how are you today?
My poor hubby has got a lovely bruise coming..and a weird one as well.
Take a look..
Its turned yellow all the way around his leg and the black bruising on his ankle is all swollen..this is the weird one as the slabs impacted where he is cut and never touched his ankle at all. His leg aches and throbs and he is having to rest it after walking for a while.
That scab is nasty and has been weeping on and off..i have already told him if it gets any worse he is off to the doctors.
sara

Updated..many many thanks to all of you for the caring and advise and especially to Marie and Lyn who emailed me and when i read them out to my hubby he looked a little sheepish and agreed to go to the doctors..the power the 2 ladies had is awesome so Thank You both of you.
My husband has been and got the all clear,no infection,no fractures or chipping of bones...he does however have serious swelling and it will take a while to go down. As my husband has to take Aspirin everyday as part of his  medication regime apparently he will bruise and bleed more easily and also take longer for the bruises to heal up.
We did the right thing by keeping the open wound clean and also making sure he rested it when he needed to..but the advice is to keep moving it and obviously rest it when he needs too but if it gets no better in a couple of weeks then he has to go back to see her.
All i can say is thank you all so much for the advice and also caring..it means a lot.

October is here..

Hello all, how are you on the 1st of October..now didn't that arrive quickly. What happened to September?
Now we should start to see the real difference in the season i hope,we have seen some leaves turning but not many.
Its the Autumn Fair at Belton House today..we had planned to go but hubbys leg and foot wouldn't make it so next year we will go.
So instead today i will be baking and the girls have made a den already in the dining room and we have a rugby match to watch later. It was chilly when i got up this morning..6degrees..and we had a slight line of condensation on our bedroom window.
Anyway Welcome October..
